Hyannis pulls through with another win coming from behind against Wareham 4-3

Harbor Hawks offense and defense combine for close one-run win

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks took home the victory in another comeback win, this time winning 4-3 against the Wareham Gatemen on Tuesday night.

Wareham (4-4-1) got to Hyannis (5-4) starting pitcher Drew Dwyer in the third inning, putting three runs on the board. Nick McLain started the scoring when he smashed a two-run home run over the wall in right-center for the Gatemen. A double and an RBI single followed that up to score the third run of the inning.

In the fifth inning, the Harbor Hawks found themselves with the bases loaded with Ben Williamson coming up to the plate. Williamson continued his hot start to the summer with a single past the shortstop that scored two runs for Hyannis.

The Harbor Hawks continued their scoring in the seventh inning, with Trey Lipsey scoring the first run of the frame on an RBI knock by Mike Sirota.

Sirota finished the game going three for three with two walks and an RBI in his second game back in the Cape League.

“[Sirota] kind of did it all tonight,” assistant coach Eric Luksis said. “It was just the total package kind of game that he gave us tonight, which is ultimately a huge reason why we won.”

The Northeastern outfielder also came in to score after a sac fly off the bat of Williamson. Williamson’s third RBI of the game gave Hyannis the 4-3 lead.

In the eighth inning, Wareham singled into right field and had a runner rounding third attempting to score and tie the game. Sirota fielded the ball and had other plans.

His rocket throw came in from right field and one-hopped Brody Donay’s glove at the plate to beat the runner and record an out for the Harbor Hawks.

“[The ball] took a funky hop out of the infield and I had a weird angle on it,” Sirota said. “I knew [Wareham] was going to try to score on it. It felt a little funky picking it up and getting rid of it, but I got it on the line.”

The bullpen had great success for Hyannis in relief of Dwyer. Simon Miller was the first out of the arm-barn, followed up by Cade Obermuelier and Ethan Lanthier.

Each reliever finished without giving up a run, with a total of seven strikeouts through five and one-third innings.

“The bullpen came in and did what they were supposed to do,” Luksis said. “We had [runners] that were on and inherited and those guys didn’t score tonight. Then we blanked them for the rest of the game. That’s what we expect from [the bullpen].”

Each part of the team had success in this one, and it was all needed to squeak out the win and get back to having a positive record.

The Harbor Hawks will look to make it three wins in a row when they take on Cotuit in the makeup game for the rainout earlier in the week. First pitch at Lowell Park will be Wednesday, June 21 at 5 p.m.

“We’re starting to get most of our team in now,” Luksis said. “We’re just trying to get guys comfortable and know how to play together. Hopefully we’ll keep this winning streak going and stay above .500.”
