Hyannis combines great pitching and explosive offense to take home 9-1 win against Wareham

Seven hitless innings pitched and 13 hits on the board for the Harbor Hawks leads to huge win

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks took home a huge eight-run divisional win against the Wareham Gatemen Sunday night. A dominant performance from the entire team led to the 9-1 victory.

The offense for the Harbor Hawks (12-11-1) got going in the top of the third inning. Will Taylor doubled down the third base line to put the first runner on for Hyannis. Trey Lipsey followed that up with a single into center.

Nick Mitchell came up with the two runners on and smashed a line drive deep into right-center field that rolled all the way to the wall. Taylor and Lipsey rounded the bases all the way to home plate and Mitchell found himself waltzing over to third base for a two-RBI triple.

“Our second time through [the batting order] we [put] some good swings together,” head coach Eric Beattie said.

The top of the fourth continued with more of the same for the Harbor Hawks. Alex Lane got the first hit of the inning with a swinging bunt to third base. Brody Donay drove Lane in with a hard-hit line drive that just stayed inside the left-field line for an RBI double.

Lipsey followed up Donay’s double down the line with one of his own. Lipsey went the other way, with a ball down the right field baseline that rolled out of play. Donay came in to score on the RBI ground-rule-double.

Lipsey has had quite the resurgence as of late and has been on fire for the past week. Within the last seven days, he’s hitting .429 with six hits and three RBIs after a slow start to the season.

“I’ve just been sticking with it, staying with the process and working every day,” Lipsey said. “Getting more at-bats and seeing more pitching makes it easier to heat up.”

In the top of the fifth, Cam Smith worked an eight-pitch at-bat that culminated in a base hit through the left side of the infield. A wild pitch and a passed ball moved him over to third. Zach Yorke got his first Cape League RBI with a sac fly to bring Smith home.

The top of the seventh inning was another big offensive inning for Hyannis. Smith jumped on a ball and smoked a line drive to the left field wall for an RBI double to score Mitchell who had walked to lead off the inning.

Yorke came up with another opportunity with Smith on base and in scoring position for him and made the most of it again. He grounded a ball through the right side for his second RBI of the game.

The third run of the frame came from a fielder’s choice off the bat of Brody Donay with the bases loaded. This put the score at 9-0 Harbor Hawks.

Wareham (10-13-2) managed its only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. The only run for the Gatemen came from a walk and a double followed up by a sacrifice fly.

The nine-run lead created a big enough cushion to power through the rest of the contest for a Hyannis win. The great offensive showing played a huge part in the win, but the pitching put the cherry on top.

Zach Voelker got the start on the mound for the Harbor Hawks. He didn’t surrender a run or a hit in his five innings on the bump.

JB Middleton and Eli Trop also threw one hitless and scoreless inning each, to cap off a great all-around pitching performance for Hyannis.

This makes it two wins in a row for the Harbor Hawks both coming in their new orange uniforms. The players and coaches seem to like the new threads and the wins that are coming with them.

“We’re undefeated in the orange [uniforms],” Lipsey said. “We’ve just got to keep it going.”

Hyannis will look to keep it going in their next matchup, taking on the Bourne Braves in the first of a three-game homestand. First pitch at McKeon Park will be Monday, July 10 at 6 p.m.
