Hyannis Mets Team Coverage 2009Sunday, June 14, 2009Red Sox Edge Mets 3-1 in Pitchers Duel
Hyannis, MA:
The Hyannis Mets (1-2) lost to the Y-D Red Sox (3-0) 3-1 in a well fought pitchers duel on a gorgeous June night at McKeon Park in Hyannis. Darrin Campbell(U. San Diego, 1-0) picked up the win for the Red Sox, as Kevin Moran (BC, 0-1) was issued the loss in the seventh after only 1 2/3 innings of work. Seth Rosin (Minn) started the game for the Mets and ran into trouble early in the top of the 2nd inning, when consecutive singles by Steve Chatwood (U. San Diego)and Brian Hernandez (UC Irvine), and a walk to Steven Selsky (Arizona) loaded the bases for the Red Sox. Rosin was able to pitch himself out of the jam though, striking out Chase Davidson (Georgia) and Daniel Butler (Arizona) to end the threat. The Mets threatened in the bottom of the 5th after Ryan Cueno (Delaware) reached base on a single, and was then moved along the basepaths on a Kasey Swab (Young Harris) sacrifice bunt, and a Casey Johnson (OU) single; putting runners at the corners for Hyannis. The threat was ended though, when Jamal Austin (UAB) hit a hard chopper to third and a last second throw beat the Austin to the bag by a hair. The game remained scoreless until the top of the 7th when Kevin Moran gave up consecutive singles to Red Sox Chase Davidson, and Daniel Butler moved Jonathon Jones (Long Beach St.), who entered the game to pinch run for Chase Davidson, into scoring postion at third base on a textbook hit and run. Will Wiedig (Brown) came in to relieve Moran, but gave up an RBI single to Blake Kelso (U of Houston) allowing Jones to score. Y-D was able to tack on 2 more runs, scoring one in the top of the eighth when Steve Chatwood hit and RBI double to score Austin Wates (VTU). The Red Sox also added an insurance run in the top of the 9th after Austin Wates hit an RBI single to score Jordan Casas after a throwing error by Jake Dunning (Indiana) put Casas (Long Beach St.) on third base. The Mets scored their only run in the bottom of the eigth, when Nick Crawford (UAB) reached base on a walk, and then stole second. A single by Casey Johnson moved Crawford to third base, and a passed ball allowed him to score. The Mets look to take on the Wareham Gatemen tommorow night at Clem Spillane Field in Wareham at 7pm.
