Mets Prevail 4-1 in Home Opener Called By Fog

Hyannis, MA-

Carried on the shoulders of pitcher Austin Hudson (Central Florida) and RBIs from Ryan Cueno (Delaware), Kenny Swab (Young Harris), and Shane Kroker (Wake Forest) the Hyannis Mets (1-0) beat the Bourne Braves 4-1 to win their 2009 home opener.

An ominous fog crept in through the trees and over the right field fence from the Hyannis Harbor, blanketing McKeon Park just as the Hyannis Mets and Bourne Braves were beginning their respective 2009 Cape Cod Baseball League campaigns. Though the fog made visibility limited, both teams elected to start the game. Though it seemed the fog had dissipated by the home half of the 3rd inning, a more dense fog came back to settle over the outfield in the beginning of the 6th inning with a 30 min fog delay being called in the bottom of the 7th inning with 1 out. The game was called at the end of the 30 min fog delay.

Hudson who went 6 solid innings, struck out 5 batters, and retired 8 in a row between the 3rd and 5th innings before issuing a walk, 1 of only 2 on the night for Hudson.

The Mets struck early, and scored their first run of the season in the home half of the 1st inning after Kenny Swab hit a RBI single to score Jamal Austin from second. Kenny Swab had a huge night for the Mets, going 3-3 with a double, a stolen base, and an RBI.

Ryan Cueno and Jamal Austin (UAB) also had big nights for the Mets at the plate; with Cueno going 2-4 with an RBI and Austin going 2-4, with two stolen bases.

Turner Phelps (0-1, James Madison) was issued the loss for the Braves (0-1), going 4 innings, giving up 4 runs, 3 of them earned.

The Hyannis Mets look to take on the Chatham Anglers at Veterans Field in Chatham tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
