Jaren Matthews (Rutgers) blasted a two-run shot in the top of the second inning and Elliot Glynn (1-0, UConn) pitched six solid innings of one-hit baseball as he earned his first win of the season and the Orleans Firebirds (1-4) cruised to a 2-0 victory over the Hyannis Mets (1-4). Jay Brown (0-1)started the game for the Mets and was issued the loss, his first of the season after picthing seven solid innings, giving up two runs on four hits, both of them earned. Michael Olt (UConn) reached base with a single to lead of the second inning before Matthews hammered a two-run homerun 332 feet over the rightfield fence to open up the scoring in the second inning. They would prove the only two runs on the night for the either team as the Mets struggled at the plated tonight, never threatenig on the base paths at any point in the game as Firebird pitching dominated. The Mets were only able to must two hits on the night, with two batters reaching base on a walk and an error by Orleans. Glynn who started the game for the Firebirds pitched six strong innings for Orleans, giving up only one hit and striking out five. Daniel Ottone (Western Carolina) preserved the win for the Firebirds, picking up his first save of the season for Orleans. Kenny Swab (Young Harris), and Nick Crawford (UAB), had the only two singles on the night for the Mets. Overall the Orleans Firebirds scored two runs on four hits and commited only one error.The Hyannis Mets scored no runs, with only two hits and commited two errors. The Hyannis Mets look to take on the Falmouth Commodores under the bright lights of McKeon Park on Thursday night at 7pm. Archives
