Hyannis Offense Explodes in Win Over Falmouth

HYANNIS - After a slow offensive start to the 2009 season, the Mets' lineup finally came to life Thursday night as they mashed their first two home runs of the season and defeated the Falmouth Commodores 13-5 at McKeon Park.

Hyannis (2-4) took an early two-run lead in the first inning against Falmouth (1-4) starter Mitch Mormann (Des Moines CC) and blew the game open with a six-run second inning. Mormann struggled with his control, walking in a run to set the table for Cody Hawn (Tennessee), who then drilled Mormann's pitch for an opposite-field grand slam, the Mets' first homer of the season. After the bases cleared, Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) crushed Mormann's next pitch over the wall in right field, completing a six-run inning and giving Hyannis a commanding 8-0 lead.

The Mets received another strong pitching performance from Austin Hudson (Central Florida), who won his second consecutive start to begin the season. Hudson pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while recording seven strikeouts.

Falmouth cut into the lead with a five-run sixth inning, including a three-run blast from Murray Watts (Arkansas State) to make the score 11-5. The Mets' relief pitching of Will Weidig (Brown), Kevin Brandt (East Carolina) and Chris Haney (Dallas Baptist) would blank the Commodores for the remainder of the night.

Nick Crawford (UAB) and Dustin Harrington (East Carolina) contributed multi-hit games for the Hyannis offense. Crawford now leads the league in hitting with a .421 average through six games. Trent Whitehead (East Carolina) was on base three times with a double and two walks.

The Mets will be back in action Friday night against Harwich at Whitehouse Field.
