Cold Night in Wareham Ends With Hyannis Loss

The Mets jumped on the board early in tonight's game at Wareham. A new look Mets lineup had Trent Whitehead (East Carolina) leading off the game and reaching base on a throwing error from Gatemen second baseman Ryan Pineda (Cal St. Northridge). Speedy Nick Crawford (UAB) followed with an infield hit putting runners on first and second until Whitehead showed some of his own speed stealing third base. The Mets number three hitter on this night, Eddie Rohan (Winthrop), grounded into a double play, with Whitehouse coming in the backdoor to give the Mets an early 1-0 lead.

That lead would last till the second inning when Cole Leonida (Georgia Tech) stepped to the plate with runners on the corners. Leonida lined his first hit of the season, an RBI double, down the third base line scoring Alex Dickerson (Indiana) and Jake Lemmerman (Duke), who came in when the ball was mishandled in Left by Met outfielder Jamal Austin (UAB). The inning would end with a great running catch in deep right from Jackie Bradley Jr. (South Carolina).

The Mets tied the game at 2 in the fourth inning with the help of some Wareham miscues. Jackie Bradley Jr. reached on an error by the shortstop. The very next pitch Bradley Jr. would go all the way to third when there was no one covering second base on his steal attempt. Two pitches later Bradley Jr. would score when the ball got by Leonida the catcher.

That would be all the scoring for Hyannis on this night. Starter Blake Monar (Indiana) held their bats in check through 5 1/3 innings surrendering just 2 runs, both of them unearned. Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) would pickup the win in relief, working the rest of the game allowing just two hits.

The Gatemen would take the lead for good in the bottom of the 8th on a hit and run single from outfielder Alex Dickerson (Indiana). Ryan Pineda, running on the play from first base, would score when the incoming throw got by Met third baseman Dustin Harrington (East Carolina).

A bright spot for the Mets tonight was Dallas Gallant throwing 3 scoreless innings, striking out five. Jackie Bradley Jr. also showed off his strong arm throwing out Wareham's Shea Vucinich trying to stretch a single into a double on a ball off the right field wall.

Hyannis returns to McKeon Park Tuesday night against Orleans.
