Mets Top Kettleers

Hyannis- Winning pitcher Ashur Tolliver(Arkansas-Little Rock) pitched 3 innings of relief to notch his 2nd win of the season as the Mets beat Cotuit 4-3. Ryan Eden(New Orleans) led the Mets offense with 3 hits and an RBI.

Chris Dominguez(Louisville) got things started in the bottom of the 1st with a double that was nearly hit out of the park. Ben Paulsen (Clemson) scored from 1st on that same hit. The Kettleers didn't stay behind long, as they quickly tied the game in the top of the 2nd, and continued to leave the score tied 1-1 until the Mets broke through in the bottom of the 5th. Eden shot a double into the gap to score Trent Ashcraft(East Carolina), who singled to start the inning.

The Kettleers could have broken the game open in the top of the 6th, but poor base running put an end to the threat, and the Mets escaped allowing only 1 run. In the bottom of the 6th, Casey Frawley(Stetson) cranked an RBI double to left center. Two batters later, Ashcraft drove Frawley in to put the Mets ahead for good.

Russell Brewer(Vanderbilt) came in to pitch a scoreless 9th to earn his 6th save. The Mets (7-5) will play a make-up game vs Harwich on Monday, June 30, at 7 pm in Hyannis. This game will be played in its entirety after it was called due to rain in the bottom of the 3rd last Tuesday.

Mets Lose Third Straight

The Hyannis Mets (6-5) lost another close game, their third striaght to the Chatham A's (6-7) last night at Veterans Field in Chatham.

Hyannis started the scoring in the first inning, after a single by Ben Paulson (Clemson), followed by a Chris Dominguez (Loiusville) single put runners on base for Luke Murton (Georgia Tech). Murton hit an RBI single to score Paulson. Chatham pitcher Bobby Hernandez settled down after Murton's single and finished out the rest of the frame with little trouble.

Hyannis picked up another run in the top of the fourth, when a walk, Ryan Eden single ( New Orleans), and two sacrifice flies allowed Murton to move to third, and eventually score. Catcher Micheal Murray (Wake Forest) picked up an RBI on the sacrifice fly that scored Murton, giving Hyannis a 2-0 lead.

Hyannis pitcher Graham Stoneburner (Clemson) ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth after a single by Kyle Bellows (San Jose State), and a double by Evan Ocheltree (Wake Forest) put runners in scoring position for Chatham. Robert Papenhouse (Brown) capitalized on the oppurtunity hitting an RBI single that drove in Bellows. Stoneburner was able to pitch around the next two batters before a sacrifice fly by Joe Mercurio (Maine) scored Ocheltree tying the game at two apiece.

Chatham proved to much for Stoneburner in the fifth as their offense started to pick up steam. A Grant Green (USC) single followed by a Corey Olson (Orange Coast) bloop single put Green into scoring position, and two runners on for Chatham. Hyannis brought in reliever Will Weidig (Brown) to end the threat. However, Weidig gave up a hit to Ocheltree that scored Grant Green giving Chatham the lead. Weiding was able to close out the rest of the inning picking up a strikeout on the way. Stoneburner(0-2) who was credited with the loss pitched four innings, and gave up three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Wiedig would end up pitching four innings of relief giving up one hit, and picking up six stikeouts.

Stellar Chatham pitching allowed the A's to hold onto the lead for the rest of the game as pitcher Bobby Hernandez (Barry) picked up the win, his first of the season. Hernandez pitched six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits. Brad Boxberger (USC) picked up his fifth save of the young Cape League season, striking out all three Hyannis batters in the top of the ninth.

Overall Chatham scored three runs on ten hits with one error. While Hyannis scored two runs on nine hits with one error.

Hyannis looks to take on Western Division leading Cotuit at home tonight under the lights of McKeon Park at 7 p.m.

Mets' Bats Silent in Orleans

Five Cardinals pitchers combined on a one hit shutout of the Mets on Friday night, as Orleans handed Hyannis their second straight loss, 1-0, at Elderidge Park.

Andrew Carraway (Virginia) started for the Mets and went six innings, allowing just one run on three hits, but still took the loss. The run was the first he has allowed all season. Rob Rasmussen (UCLA) earned the win for the Cardinals, pitching five shutout innings and tallying eight punchouts.

The lone run of the game crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gary Brown (Cal State Fullerton) led off the frame with a base hit, was sacrificed over by Cole Figueroa (Florida), and scored on single off the bat of Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount). The only Mets hit of the evening came in their half of the fourth, a double by Chris Dominguez (Louisville).

Hyannis returns to the field tomorrow night at Chatham, against whom they are 1-1 this summer. The Mets return home on Sunday to host Cotuit.

Mets Defeat Braves in Rain Soaked Game

Bourne- The Mets extended their winning streak to 4 after a 4-3 win over the Bourne Braves. Chris Dominguez (Louisville) had two hits, which led the Mets offense. Despite being out-hit 11-4 the Mets (6-2) took advantage of walks and errors by the Bourne defense. Will Weidig(Brown) got the win in 2.2 innings of relief.

Luke Murton(Georgia Tech) got the Mets on the board in the 1st with a sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Eden(New Orleans), who led off the game with a walk. After Austin Adams(Faulkner) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Joey Gonzales(UC-Riverside) struck out, but an error allowed him to reach safely. Casey Frawley(Stetson) and Dominguez came into score on the play. In the top of the 2nd, catcher Curt Casali(Vanderbilt) walked to start the inning and was knocked in by Dominguez.

The Braves had a chance to take control of the game in the bottom of the 7th when they had the bases loaded with just 1 out. But after a failed safety squeeze and a strike out by reliever Ashur Tolliver(Arkansas-Little Rock) the threat was tamed. Russell Brewer(Vanderbilt) came in for the save, his 5th of the year, and made a spectacular diving catch on a bunt attempt to end the game.

Gonzales and center fielder Trent Ashcraft(East Carolina) had the other two hits to complete the Mets offense today. The Mets will play again Monday June 23 at home vs Brewster at 7 pm.

Mets win third straight

Starting pitcher Andrew Carraway (Virginia) turned in another solid performance and Russell Brewer (Vanderbilt) picked up his league-best fourth save as Hyannis defeated Wareham 4-1 Saturday night at McKeon Park. The Mets have now won three in a row and are 5-2 overall, while the Gatemen dropped to 3-3.

Carraway (2-0) gave up no runs on three hits while fanning seven and walking one in five innings of work. In two starts, he has pitched 10.1 scoreless innings and given up just seven hits to go along with 14 strikeouts.

Offensively, third baseman Chris Dominguez (Louisville) hit a two-run, opposite-field homer in the bottom of the first and added a double in the fifth. First baseman Ben Paulsen (Clemson) had a two-run single and finished 3-for-4 on the evening.

Austin Adams (Faulkner) struck out the side in the eighth and Brewer pitched a one-two-three ninth, including two strikeouts, to earn another save. He has now pitched five scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and one walk while fanning five.

Prior to the game, the Mets held a formal dedication of the brand new lighting system at McKeon Park as several people were honored for their time and generosity. Hyannis returns to action Sunday at Bourne (2 p.m.) before hosting Harwich on Monday.

Mets take two straight

Thanks in part to some poor defense on the part of Orleans and strong pitching from Austin Hudson (Central Florida) and Jason Franzblau (Arizona State), the Mets topped the Cardinals 8-1 on Friday night, improving to 4-2.
A five run second inning proved to be the difference as the Mets were given two extra outs and made the most of them, as Trent Ashcraft (East Carolina), Ryan Eden (New Orleans), and Chris Dominguez (Louisville) all had RBI singles. For Dominguez, it was his first hit of the summer.
Hudson, the starting pitcher, picked up his first win of the season, after going 5 innings of shutout baseball. He did not allow a hit through 4 1/3 innings. Franzblau, signed to a temporary contract, tossed the other four innings, allowing just one run and striking out four, while picking up the save.
Brown's Matt Nuzzo capped off the Mets scoring with a two-run double in the eighth to put the game away. It was also Nuzzo's first hit of the season.
The Mets play the final game of their four game homestand tomorrow night against the Wareham Gatemen. There will be a pregame ceremony honoring all those who helping put up the lights this offseason.

Tolliver and Glantz Propel Mets to Win Over Y-D

Hyannis- Ashur Tolliver (University of Arkansas) pitched four innings of relief to get his first win of the 2008 season as the Mets defeated the two-time defending champions the Y-D Red Sox in a 6-4 win on Thursday, June 19th. With this win, the Mets (3-2) ended their two-game losing streak.

Y-D got the scoring started in the 1st when Greg Miclat ( University of Virginia) reached on a bunt, then went on to steal 2nd and 3rd base, and was finally knocked in by Nick Liles' ( Western Carolina) RBI single. Mike Tamsin (Northeastern) walked to open the 2nd and was driven in by Miclat. In the Mets half of the 2nd, the bats came alive with back to back singles singles by Dale Cornstubble (Central Michigan, 3 hits) and Austin Adams(Faulkner.) They would both later score on an error by Y-D.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Mets struck again, the big hit coming off the bat of Michael Glantz(Young Harris.) Glantz roped a two-out RBI double to left center off Red Sox pitcher Chris Masters (Western Carolina) scoring Luke Murton(Georgia Tech, double), Curt Casali(Vanderbilt) and Cornstubble.

A scary moment came with 2 outs in the top of the 7th as Tolliver was struck in the lower leg by a broken bat. After a few warm up tosses, Tolliver was cleared to go and he went on to retire the 3rd out of the inning.

Russell Brewer(Vanderbilt) came on to relieve Tolliver in the 8th to notch a two-inning save, his third save of this young season. In the bottom of the 8th, the Mets added some insurance when Ryan Eden (New Orleans, 2 hits, RBI and a Stolen Base) knocked an RBI double. Casey Frawley(Stetson) added two hits for the Mets. The Mets will play again on Friday, June 20th at 7pm against Orleans at Mckeon Park, Hyannis.

Muren shines, but Mets drop second straight

Despite a dominating performance from reliever Drew Muren (Northridge), the Hyannis Mets (2-2) dropped their second straight game, losing 5-3 to the Chatham A's (1-3) Wednesday night at McKeon Park.

The hard-throwing right-hander gave up just one hit and struck out eight while walking one in four scoreless innings of relief for Hyannis. Starting pitcher Matt Ridings (Western Kentucky) fanned nine in five innings, but gave up five runs -- all in the second.

Corey Overholtzer (UNC-Greensboro) had an RBI double and second baseman Devin Lohman (Long Beach State) added a 3-run homer over the right-centerfield fence to propel the A's. Ridings settled down after the second, giving up just two hits and striking out six, while picking off a runner, in the final three frames.

Offensively, the Mets put together a two-out rally to score two in the second. Curt Casali (Vanderbilt) and Joey Gonzalez (UC-Riverside) singled and both came around to score on RBI singles by Austin Adams (Faulkner) and Stephen Ashcraft (East Carolina).

The Mets cut the lead to two in the seventh when Ashcraft singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Casey Frawley (Stetson).

However, that's as close as they would get. Kevin Coutoure (USC) pitched a scoreless eighth and fellow Trojan Brad Boxberger struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his first save.

Left-hander Sammy Solis (San Diego) earned the win for Chatham after giving up two unearned runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking one in five innings of work.

Ashcraft led the way for the Mets, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.

Both teams return to action Thursday as Hyannis hosts Yarmouth-Dennis (7 p.m.) while Chatham travels to Falmouth (7 p.m.).

Mets can't stay afloat of the Whitecaps

The Hyannis Mets got their first taste of defeat this evening as the Brewster Whitecaps beat the Mets 6-4 at Stony Brook Field in Brewster.
Early on it looked as if Hyannis was going to break though offensively, but Brewster Whitecaps pitcher Tim Clubb (Missouri State) pitched out of a jam in the top of the second to leave the bases loaded.
Brewster was the first to start the scoring as Nate Lape (Marshall) blasted a two-run homerun over the left field fence. A string of walks and an error allowed the Whitecaps to load the bases in the bottom of the second. Brewster picked up another run when Hyannis pitcher Graham Stoneburner (Clemson) walked a runner home. Stoneburner would strike out James Meader (San Diego) to end the inning, his fourth strikeout of the night and third of the inning.
Stoneburner ran into more trouble in the bottom of the third after a double, error, and fielders choice loaded the bases for the Whitecaps again. An oppurtunity Jim Klocke (Southeast Missouri) would capitalize on, knocking home another run with an RBI single. Hyannis would bring in Will Weidig (Brown) to record the last out of the inning and relieve Stoneburner who went 2.2 innings allowing four hits, and striking out four.
The Whitecaps added to their lead three innings later, in the bottom of the seventh when Ryan Wheeler (Loyola Marymount) and Nate Lape blasted back-to-back solo home runs; Lape's second of the night. Wiedig pitched through the rest of the inning successfully. Wiedig went 4.1 innings allowing two hits, with three strike-outs
The Hyannis Mets started to show offensive sparks before they caught fire in the top of the eigth when Stephen Ashcraft (East Carolina) started off the inning with a base hit followed by a Steve Daniels (Brown) single. Luke Murton (Georgia Tech) put Hyannis on the score board when he scorched a double that scored Ashcraft and Daniels. Hyannis' new found offense forced the Whitecaps to bring in pitcher Rory McKean (Mississippi) for some much needed relief to close out the inning. The Mets however, had other plans. Chris Dominguez (Liousville) picked up and RBI on a hard hit groundout that Micheal Glantz (Young Harris) hustled to tag, and score on. Ben Paulson (Clemson) also picked up an RBI single, before McKean struck out two to end the inning.
Mets pitcher Austin Adams (Faulkner) was able to hold off any offensive surge by the Whitecaps in the bottom of the eigth allowing his team a chance to gain control of the game.
Brewster pithcer Mark Lamm proved to much for Hyannis though, as the Mets failed to recapture the offense they had kindled only an inning before. Lamm retired the side in a 1-2-3 inning picking up a strikeout. Brewster tallied 6 runs on 6 hits, and Hyannis 4 runs on 5 hits, with 3 errors.
The Hyannis Mets return home to McKeon Park on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 to host the Chatam Athletics at 7p.m. under the lights.

Mets prevail in pitchers' duel, move to 2-0

Three pitchers combined to throw an eight-hit shut out in the Hyannis Mets' 1-0 victory over Falmouth (1-1) in the home opener at McKeon Park Monday night.

Starting pitcher Andrew Carraway (Virginia) picked up the win after giving up four hits and striking out seven in 5.1 innings of work, while Ashur Tolliver (Arkansas-Littlerock) gave up three hits and fanned three in 2.2 innings and Russell Brewer (Vanderbilt) closed the door in the ninth to pick up his second save for the Mets, which improved to 2-0 on the young season.

In a classic pitchers' duel, Hyannis' lone run came in the fourth on four base on balls. Luke Murton (Georgia Tech) walked and later scored on a walk by Casey Frawley (Stetson). Frawley reached base safely all three times -- he double, walked and was hit by a pitch.

Steve Daniels (Brown) added a triple for the Mets, while Murton, John Hinson (Clemson) and Trent Ashcroft (East Carolina) had one hit apiece. The Mets play at Brewster Tuesday night (5 p.m.) and return home to play Chatham Wednesday at 7 p.m.

AJ Pollock (Notre Dame), Trevor Coleman (Missouri) and Rob Segiden (Tulane) had two hits each for Falmouth, which plays at Orleans on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Starting pitcher Rex Brothers (Lipscomb) took the loss after giving up one run on three hits, while walking five and striking out four in four innings. Evan Danielli (Notre Dame) and Ben Tootle (Jacksonville State) combined to pitch four scoreless innings in relief.

Mets Take Opener

For the first time since 2003 the Hyannis Mets find themselves with a record of 1-0 to start the Cape League season. The Mets defeated the Chatham A's 4-3 at Veterans Field in Chatham on Saturday to start the season on a high note.
Casey Frawley (Stetson) delivered the game's key hit, a two on, two out single to center in the top of ninth with game tied at three to put the Mets on top by their final margin. Ben Paulson (Clemson) was a big contributor for Hyannis as well, going 2-5 with three runs batted in.
The game was a back and forth battle throughout, with Chatham getting the scoring started by pushing two runs across in the first off Mets starter Austin Hudson (Central Florida). Hyannis answered with two of their own in the fifth. An A's run in the sixth and a Mets run in the seventh tied it at three, before the Frawley tie-breaking hit.
Pitching was a highlight throughout, with Chatham striking out 13 Mets and Hyannis returning the favor 14 times, including seven by Notre Dame reliever Ryan Sharpley in just three innings pitched.
Cal Northridge's Drew Muren picked up the win (1-0) and the loss went to Kevin Couture of USC (0-1), while Russell Brewer (Vanderbilt) picked up his first save.
The Mets play their home opener on Sunday at 7 P.M., the first regular season game under McKeon Park's new lights, against the two time defending CCBL champion Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
