Wareham Opens the Flood Gates on Hyannis

Hyannis,MA- The Hyannis Mets (16-15) lost their sixth straight tonight, and third in six games to the Wareham Gatemen (11-19) in a 13-2 blowout on a sticky night at McKeon Park before a crowd of 1,950.

The Mets dug themselves a deep hole in the first inning and could not find a way to crawl back out in later innings. Pitcher Alex McRee (Georgia) faced eight batters in the first inning and allowed 4 runs (only two of them earned) on 3 hits. Errors by Chris Dominguez (Louisville) and Matt Nuzzo allowed the other two runs to score.

After the first inning McRee was able to settle down and and cruise through the third and fourth innings before running into a jam in the fourth when singles by Tom Stack-Babich (Harvard) and Shea Vucinich (Washington State), and a walk to Raynor Campbell (Baylor) loaded the bases for the Gatemen. McRee was able to pitch out of the jam though and end the frame, getting Ryan Pineda to fly-out, and striking out Dean Blake (LSU) to close out the inning. McRee struggled in the fifth as well, hitting Jake Lemmerman (Duke) with a pitch, and giving up a two-run shot to to Connor Rowe (Texas). Overall McRee who was charged with the loss, and drops to 1-1 pitched five innings, giving up six runs on six hits, with two walks and ten strike outs.


In the 4th inning Hyannis was able to manufacture two runs, when Marcus Jones (NC State) and Casey Frawley (Stetson) scored on wild pitches. Hyannis threatened again in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Nuzzo (Brown) reached third on a Trent Ashcraft (Eastern Carolina) double, but Hyannis was unable to make anything of the oppurtunity and ended up leaving six men on base through the game.


Matt Bashere (Indiana) picked up the win for the Gatemen, improving to 1-2 on the season. Bashere pitched six innings giving up two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out ten.

Leading the Gatemen in offense included Ryan Pineda, who went 2-for-6 with a double and three run home-run that bounced off the top of the outfield fence, hit the scoreboard and then landed on the grass below. Connor Rowe (Texas) who had a 3 RBI night, including a 2 run shot, and Shea Vucinich who went 3-for-5 with two singles and an RBI double.

Matt Nuzzo, Ryan Eden (New Orleans), and Trent Ashcraft each had doubles for the Mets.


Austin Graham (Alabama) picked up his first save on the season for the Gatemen retiring the Mets in a 1-2-3 ninth inning that saw pitchers Drew Muren and Russell Brewer pinch hitting.

Overall the Wareham Gatemen scored 13 runs on 15 hits, commiting 2 errors and leaving 11 men on base. The Hyannis Mets scored 2 runs on 6 hits, commiting 3 errors and leaving 6 on base.

The Mets, who are tied for 1st place in the Western Division with Bourne look to take on the Braves tommorow in a battle for divisional supremacy at Doran Park in Bourne at 2pm.
