Hyannis Team Coverage 2008Thursday, July 10, 2008Stoneburner and Ridings keep Cardinals Caged
Orleans- East met West tonight as a division leading clash turned into a defensive battle for the West Division leading Hyannis Mets and East leading Orleans Cardinals. The Mets (13-9) proved to much for the Cardinals though, winning their second straight game as Graham Stoneburner (Clemson) and Matt Ridings (WKU) combined for a two-hit shutout to blank the Cardinals
(13-9) 1-0. Stoneburner started the game and pitched five solid innings, giving up only two hits, walking three, and fanning three. Stoneburner ran into a little trouble in the third inning when he issued a walk to Tim Wheeler (Sacremento State), Matt Bowman (Nevada-Reno) singled, and Rich Poythress hit a sacrifice fly to move runners into scoring position. Stoneburner was able to keep the Cardinals caged though, as he recored the final out of the frame by striking out Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount). Matt Ridings took over the mound to start the sixth inning and picked up his first win after pitching four innings of shut-out baseball. Ridings improved to 1-1 and picked up two strikeouts on his way to the win. The Mets bats which had been silent most of the night came alive in the top of the eigth, when Trent Ashcraft (Eastern Carolina) hit a double, and then stole third to move into scoring position. Marcus Jones (NC State) picked up his second RBI of the season when he hit a single that dropped in front of Orleans centerfielder Alex Hassan (Duke) and scored Ashcraft. Overall the Mets scored one run on six hits with no errors, while the Orleans Cardinals mustered only two hits and commited one error. The Hyannis Mets look to take on the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox tommorow night at 7pm under the bright lights of McKeon Park. Archives
