Mets Drop Marathon

Hyannis- Hampton Tignor(Florida) laced a two-out RBI single to center in the top of the 12th to give Orleans a 9-8 win over Hyannis. Winning pitcher Adam Wilk(Long Beach State,2-1) went 2 innings allowing just one hit for the Cardinals(18-9).

Orleans got the scoring started early, scoring a run in the top of the 1st on a double by Angleo Songco(Loyola Marymount). The Mets responded with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st when Ben Paulsen(Clemson) singled to right, by an error allowed Marcus Jones(NC State) to score from first. After an intentional walk, Paulsen scored on an error off the bat of Casey Frawley(Stetson). The Mets scored 2 again in the 2nd when Paulsen tripled to right knocking in Curt Casali(Vanderbilt) and Trent Ashcraft(E. Carolina), who both singled earlier in the inning.

After a fielder's choice allowed Ashcraft to reach base, Paulsen's RBI single allowed Ashcraft, who had stole 2nd, to cross home plate. The very next batter, Chris Dominguez(Louisville) tripled home Paulsen and the Mets went up by the score of 6-2. In the top of the 6th, Orleans took advantage of two Mets errors and had two huge back-to-back extra base hits off the bats of Mike Murphy(Maryland) who tripled, then Alex Hassan(Duke) who doubled. The Cardinals scored 5 in the 6th and took a 7-6 lead.

The Mets did not wait long to answer, Jones led off the bottom of the 6th with a single, then Paulsen, who was a double away from the cycle, homered to right to give the Mets an 8-7 lead. The Mets took that lead into the 8th until the Cardinals tied the game without the benefit of a hit. Pinch-hitter Rich Poythress(Georgia) earned a bases loaded walk and an unearned run came into score. Orleans got back-to-back singles from Songco and Cole Figueroa(Florida) in the 12th, then Tignor's single put the Cardinals up 9-8. Hassan came in for a 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th to earn his 3rd save of the season.

The Mets(16-11) will play at Bourne, Thursday, July 17th at 7pm. They will return home on Saturday, July 19th against Wareham also a 7pm starting time.
