Longballs Lift Mets

The Hyannis bats had their biggest power surge of the season in Brewster on Wednesday night as the Mets topped the Whitecaps 7-4. It was a sloppy game throughout, with the teams combining to commit 7 errors, 5 of them by the Mets.

Brewster took an early lead with three runs in the third inning when Mississippi State's Jason Nappi singled to lead off. He was sacrificed over and came in to score on a Ty Kelly (UC Davis) single. Derek Poppert of San Francisco reached on an error to follow Kelly, and they both scored when Connor Powers (Mississippi State) doubled.

Ben Paulsen (Clemson) homered in the fourth for Hyannis, but the Mets really poured it on in the fifth frame.

Ryan Eden of New Orleans got things started when he was plunked and Curt Casali (Vanderbilt) followed Eden with his first home run of the season to tie it at 3. UC Riverside's Joey Gonzales reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Trent Ashcraft of East Carolina, the team's leading hitter. Ashcraft stole second and third base before scoring on a Paulsen double to make it 6-3 Hyannis.

The Mets and Whitecaps each would add a run each on solo home runs. Hyannis would get one from Georgia Tech's Luke Murton in the sixth and Brewster from Mike Freeman of Clemson in the seventh.

Ryan Sharpley (Notre Dame) picked up the win for Mets, moving to 1-0, as he struck out 8 in 4 innings of 1 run baseball. Robert Gilliam of UNC Greensboro took the loss and fell to 1-2, allowing the first six Hyannis runs. Vanderbilt's Russell Brewer pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 7th save.

Hyannis returns home on Thursday to host Harwich, before traveling to Yarmouth-Dennis on Friday for a Fourth of July matchup with the two time defending CCBL champion, Red Sox.
