Cornstubble Powers Mets Past Whitecaps

Hyannis, MA- Graham Stoneburner (Clemson) picked up the win and improved to 2-2 on the season and Dale Cornstubble (CMU) hit a two-run shot to cap a three-run fourth inning as the Hyannis Mets (17-16) snapped their seven game losing streak, beating the Brewster Whitecaps (13-17-3) at home 5-2.

Stoneburner pitched six innings allowing two runs on four hits with only one of the runs earned, and fanning seven on the way to the win. Matt Ridings (WKU) was steller in relief, pitching three innings of shut-out baseball, giving up only two hits, striking out five, and picking up his first save of the season.

Dale Cornstubble set the tone for the Mets early in the night when he picked off Jason Nappi (Miss. State), who had walked to lead off the game at first base to record the first out of the game. Cornstubble then capped the Mets three run fourth inning, hammering a two-run shot over the left-field fence to score himself, and Joey Gonzales (UC-Riverside). Gonzales picked up an RBI single on the previous at-bat, bringing home Ryan Eden who had reached base on a hard hit single to the short-stop and then stole second to move into scoring position. Hyannis would pick up one more run in the fifth when Chris Dominguez (Louisville) hit a double to score Trent Ashcraft (Eastern Carolina) who walked to get on base.

The Whitecaps picked up their only two runs in the fifth inning when Derek Poppert (San Francisco) scored on a Jason Nappi single, and Jason Nappi scored on a throwing error by Chris Dominguez.

Evan Bronson (Trinity) was charged with the loss, and drops to 1-1 on the season. Bronson pitched five innings allowing five runs on seven hits.

Overall the Hyannis Mets scored five runs on eight hits and commited one error. The Brewster Whitecaps scored two runs on six hits and commited one error.

The Hyannis Mets look to take on the Harwich Mariners tommorow night at 7pm at Whitehouse Field in Harwich.
