Hyannis Team Coverage 2008Wednesday, June 18, 2008Muren shines, but Mets drop second straight
Despite a dominating performance from reliever Drew Muren (Northridge), the Hyannis Mets (2-2) dropped their second straight game, losing 5-3 to the Chatham A's (1-3) Wednesday night at McKeon Park.
The hard-throwing right-hander gave up just one hit and struck out eight while walking one in four scoreless innings of relief for Hyannis. Starting pitcher Matt Ridings (Western Kentucky) fanned nine in five innings, but gave up five runs -- all in the second. Corey Overholtzer (UNC-Greensboro) had an RBI double and second baseman Devin Lohman (Long Beach State) added a 3-run homer over the right-centerfield fence to propel the A's. Ridings settled down after the second, giving up just two hits and striking out six, while picking off a runner, in the final three frames. Offensively, the Mets put together a two-out rally to score two in the second. Curt Casali (Vanderbilt) and Joey Gonzalez (UC-Riverside) singled and both came around to score on RBI singles by Austin Adams (Faulkner) and Stephen Ashcraft (East Carolina). The Mets cut the lead to two in the seventh when Ashcraft singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Casey Frawley (Stetson). However, that's as close as they would get. Kevin Coutoure (USC) pitched a scoreless eighth and fellow Trojan Brad Boxberger struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his first save. Left-hander Sammy Solis (San Diego) earned the win for Chatham after giving up two unearned runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking one in five innings of work. Ashcraft led the way for the Mets, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored. Both teams return to action Thursday as Hyannis hosts Yarmouth-Dennis (7 p.m.) while Chatham travels to Falmouth (7 p.m.).
