Squandered opportunities would be the theme of the day for Hyannis, which left 16 runners on base. Scott Elmendorf led the team in this category, leaving 7 runners on. This did not help the cause of pitcher Andrew Doyle, who allowed 3 earned runs through 5 and 2/3’s innings. Doyle pitched effectively, but ended the day with a no decision, giving up 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8.
The Mets struck early in the first when a bases loaded walk to third basemen Dan Brewer scored a run. However the Mets could not further capitalize as second basemen Scott Elmendorf bounced into an inning ending double play. Bourne did not take long to answer Hyannis’ first inning run, scoring its first in the bottom of the 2nd on a two out double by outfielder Bill Hall. In the top of the fourth, two walks and a single left the Mets with the bases loaded and only one out. Consecutive singles by Phil Bell and Shane Peterson scored 2 runs for the Mets, as they went up 3-1.
The Mets later came close to adding their fourth run in the top of the 6th. With runners on first and second, Shane Peterson hit an infield fly where he was ruled automatically out. What seemed as a dead play was revived by the alert base running of outfielder Joey Gonzales. Noticing that the third basemen Bill Perry was in the middle of the infield catching the pop up, Gonzales promptly tagged and beat the fielder to the vacant base in a thrilling dash. Gonzales’ efforts would go for naught however. After first basemen Kiko Vazquez struck out, Brewer was intentionally walked to first, leaving Scott Elmendorf up the bat with the bases again loaded. He could not capitalize however, grounding out to end the inning.
The Braves then tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a two run home run by outfielder Brian Pruitt. Hyannis Shortstop Ryan Jackson was able to put the Mets ahead the next inning, after an error by Bourne first basemen Mitch Moreland on a Joey Gonzales grounder.
The Braves went ahead for good in the bottom of the 7th. Pitcher Hunter Harris, on in relief for Doyle, allowed the first two runners on base, and after a sacrifice bunt and a walk, the bases were loaded. Garret Sherrill then took over, allowing a 2 run single to Bourne first basemen Josh Satin. The Braves took the lead and never looked back. Bourne pitcher Jordan Flasher finished off the Mets in the ninth to get the save and ensure victory for the Braves. The Mets will next take on the Orleans Cardinals tonight at Eldridge Park at 7 o clock.

Ross Moulton

Late Ralley pushes Brewster past Hyannis

Hyannis- With a one run game heading into the top of the eighth it looked like a nail biter that was going into extra innings. Jason Franzblau (Bradley) fanned six Whitecaps and looked in control with the only run coming from a shot over the right center fence from Yonder Alanso (U Miami).

<u1:p></u1:p>The inning was started with a bunt single from Tavo Hall (San Francisco), followed by a double to the gap in right center by Blake Tekotte (U Miami) which prompted coach Greg King to head to the pen. James Jolicoeur (UC Northridge) had a 1.23 and fourteen strikeouts in fourteen innings pitched heading into tonight’s game, so it wasn’t like Coach King was heading into a pressure situation with an unproven arm. However, today was not Jolicoer’s day. After giving up an infield hit to Austin Yount (Stanford) to score Hall from third, Yonder Alanso who was two for three with a homerun, Alanso hit a three run shot over the right field fence. A double by David Cooper (California) and a walk by Byron Wiley (Kansas State) paved the way for Brad Glenn (Arizona) to hit the second three run homer of the inning.
<u1:p></u1:p><u1:p>
</u1:p>If you stepped away to use the restroom or grab a hot dog you could have missed the seven run eighth from Brewster.
<u1:p></u1:p>
Playing with a sense of urgency up at bat, the Mets were able to put up three runs in the eighth, but it was no match for the four run lead they were down. A game that was coming up on the two and a half minute mark through eight seemed to go on forever after the quick pace from both Franzblau and Mika Colla (Arizona). The Mets got back in the win column defeating the Chatham A's 8-3 Thursday night.
Hunter Harris (Texas) took the win for the Mets, pitching in relief for starter Matt Daly (Hawaii). Daly went 5 1/3 innings in his best start of the season giving up 2 runs and striking out 7. Walks clearly plagued Daly and inevitably lead to his early exit. After walking the first two batters of the second inning Daly was able to strike his way out of the jam. Unfortunately the same was not true for the fourth inning as Daly again walked the first two A's batters. Chatham took advantage of the situation and plated the game's first two runs. The Mets starter was able to make quick work of the Chatham A's fifth inning retiring the side in order. However, a high pitch count forced Daly from the game in the fifth inning giving way to Harris.
Chatham A's starter Charles Brewer (UCLA) made the two run lead look comfortable as he cruised through the first four innings spotless, retiring the first twelve Mets batters he faced. James Darnell (South Carolina) broke up the no-hitter in the fifth inning as he blasted a double into left center. Darnell advanced to third on a Joey Gonzalez (UC-Riverside) single. The Mets got on the board when Kiko Vazquez (UCF) hit a fly ball to right field deep enough to score Darnell from third.
After breaking the seal in the fifth inning the Mets came alive scoring in each consecutive inning. Mets batters plated one run in the fifth, sixth & seventh innings, three in the eighth and two in the ninth.
James Darnell crushed a solo homerun to right-center in the ninth inning and ended the night going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's. Shane Peterson (Long Beach St.) continued to tear apart Cape League pitching going 2 for 4 with one run batted in. UC-Riverside Left Fielder Joey Gonzalez also went 2 for 4 and drove in a run as well.
Earning the win for the Mets, Hunter Harris entered with one out in the fifth inning and never looked back. Harris was strong in his 2 1/3 innings of work striking out 4 A's batters. Harris gave up two hits in the seventh but bounced back in the eighth striking out the side.
Harris gave way to Mets closer Tyler Stohr (North Florida). Although not a save situation Stohr came in to close the door on the Chatham ninth inning. Stohr struggled to find his groove but gave up just one run ending the game in favor of the Mets 8-3.
The Mets are in action again Friday night at McKeon Park to face the Bourne Braves at 5:00 p.m. Those unable to attend can watch the game and commentary of John Cabral and Chris Blake as every Hyannis Mets home game will be webcast live at http://ccbl.cape.com/.

Brian Feltes

Brewer homer in 8th ties it

HYANNIS - The Cotuit Kettleers took a 4-3 lead over the Hyannis Mets into the bottom of the eighth inning, which had been designated as the last inning. It took a Dan Brewer (Bradley) home run off of Josh Lindblom with one out in the inning to tie the game at four in a game that would end after eight innings with the score 4-4.

The Mets got on the bored in the very first inning, as Scott Elmendorf (Southern Illinois) reached on an error, Shane Peterson (Long Beach State) singled, and they both advanced on a balk. With runners on second and third, James Darnell (South Carolina) stepped up and hit a triple to left center field plating both runners.

Cotuit got one run back in the top of the third when Correy Figueroa (St. Petersburg) walked and scored on a double by Josh Harrison (Cincinnati). Hyannis took it right back though, as Peterson delivered his second hit of the day, a home run to left field that just missed hitting a target placed beyond the left field fence.

The game's momentum took an enormous swing in the top of the sixth and into the seventh. In the sixth the Kettleers scored two runs on a base hit from Reese Havens (South Carolina) that scored Ryne White (Purdue) and Jason Rook (Appalachian State). They took the lead in the seventh when Figueroa scored on a double from Mets killer Robert Stock (USC).

The game situation for Hyannis mirrored the weather as the game moved to the eighth: glum and dreary. But, with one out in the eighth, Brewer hit his third home run of the season to tie the game at four. The Mets would load the bases, but fail to score the winning run in the eighth and final inning.

Bryce Stowell of UC Irvine started for the Mets and turned in his second strong start in as many outings, going six innings and giving up three earned runs and seven hits while fanning seven. South Carolina's Robert Stock took the hill for Cotuit and lasted five plus innings, giving up two runs and just one earned, while striking out four.

The Mets return to the field Thursday night, as they travel to Chatham to take on the Athletics.

Chris Blake

Doyle Blanks the Mets

SOUTH YARMOUTH- Terry Doyle (Boston College) improved his record to 3-1 and shut out the Hyannis Mets in 7 1/3 innings of work as the Y-D Red Sox defeated the Hyannis Mets 5-0 on Tuesday night. Doyle struck out seven Mets batters and gave up just two hits while walking just one. Austin Wood (Texas) gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings of work for the Mets and was stuck with his first loss of the season.

Wood got through the first two innings unscathed but gave up the eventual game winning run when Grant Green (USC) scored on a Sean Ochinko (LSU) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning. The Red Sox added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively. The Red Sox scored one last run off of Mets starter Austin Wood when Collin Cowgill (Kentucky) hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the fourth inning.

Wood was replaced by Cal Northridge right-hander James Jolicouer who entered the game with a 1.35 ERA in four appearances. Jolicouer worked effectively retiring all four batters he faced.

The Red Sox added three more in the bottom half of the eighth when San Diego reliever Ricardo Pecina, who has had a difficult time getting things going this season, started off by walking the first two batters. Aaron Luna (Rice) and Collin Cowgill scored on a pinch-hitting Diego Seastrunk (Rice) single. Jason Castro (Stanford) who reached on a fielder’s choice scored the final run of the game on a perfectly executed squeeze play by Grant Green (USC).

Four hits were all Mets batters were able to muster as David Macias (Vanderbilt), Shane Petersen (Southern Illinois), Patrick Long (Georgia Tech) and Shea Robin (Vanderbilt) all singled in the contest.

The Mets are in action again Wednesday night at McKeon Park to face the Cotuit Kettlers at 5:00 p.m. Those unable to attend can watch the game and commentary of John Cabral and Chris Blake as every Hyannis Mets home game will be webcast live at http://ccbl.cape.com/.

Brian Feltes

Mets back in the win column, 11-8 over A's

Hyannis improved their record to 6-8 with an 11-8 victory over the Chatham A's tonight. Hyannis wasted no time in getting runs across the board. The first four batters scored for Hyannis, including a fantastic push bunt by center fielder Dan Brewer that didn’t even garner a throw. After a walk to third basemen James Darnell, right fielder Shane Peterson smoked a liner to right center, ending up on third and clearing the bases. He would later score on a grounder by first basemen Kiko Vazquez. Peterson, who entered the game batting a team high .354, ended the day 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, 2 runs and a hit by pitch. Brewer and Vazquez also ended the day with 3 RBIs a piece. The Mets would add two more runs in the second, with Elmendorf scoring his second run in as many innings. Chatham pitcher Tom Milone struggled early on, loading the bases in his first two innings of work. He settled down after the second however, recording consecutive 1-2-3 innings.

For Hyannis, pitcher Andrew Doyle further established himself as the resident staff ace for the Mets. Improving to 3-0 on the season, he finished the day with 6 innings of work, striking out 5, walking 2 and allowing two earned runs. His toughest inning of work came in the fourth, when Allan Dykstra led off the inning scorching a 400 foot double over the head of Brewer. After a single by Kevin McAvoy and an ensuing walk, Doyle was left with the bases loaded and only one out. A sacrifice fly by Addison Johnson then brought Dykstra home with Chatham’s second run of the day. After an error by Darnell, Doyle got third basemen Jermaine Curtis to ground out to third to get out of the inning.

The fifth inning began with a lucky play to record the third out. With a fly ball to right by Dykstra, catcher Tim Federowicz faked like he was tagging up from second, only to trip on his way back to the bag. Shortstop Ryan Jackson intercepted the throw from Peterson right off of second and easily tagged the Chatham catcher out. In the bottom half of the inning, the offensive onslaught continued for the Mets, starting with a walk to Darnell. Three straight doubles by Peterson, Vazquez, and Jackson left the Mets with a 9-3 lead. The Mets would add their last 2 runs in the sixth, with a two run home run by Brewer. His shot to right was his second of the year, which leads the team.

Doyle was relieved in the seventh by Stephen Penney, the newest addition to the Mets. Penney struggled, having to leave the mound allowing five runs. The inning didn't come to an end until Hunter Harris got Addison Johnson to fly out. Harris would finish the game for the Mets, working 2 and one-thirds of an inning, allowing only one run on a wild pitch in the ninth. The Mets will continue their season on the road Tuesday at 5, where they play the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at Red Wilson Park.

Ross Moulton

HYANNIS - The Wareham Gatemen did something they h...

HYANNIS - The Wareham Gatemen did something they haven't they done since opening day Thursday night in Hyannis. Win a game. The Gatemen defeated the Mets 6-3 behind a strong pitching performance by Jeremy Bleich (Stanford) and three RBI's from Beamer Weems (Baylor).

Wareham scored five runs before the Hyannis even got on the board. In the first Seth Henry (Tulane) reached and scored on an error, Weems singled and scored on a groundout by Russ Moldenhauer (Texas), and Blake Dean (LSU) scored on a basehit from Diallo Fon (Arizona). Two more runs would come across in the second on a Weems single that plated Luke Murton (Georgia Tech) and Henry.

Hyannis scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second. Kiko Vazquez (Central Florida) led off with a single and was sacrificed over by Scott Elmendorf (Southern Illinois). Patrick Long (Georgia Tech) followed with a single and Ryan Jackson (Miami) reached on a walk to load to the bases before Shea Robin (Vanderbilt) singled in two runs. Phil Bell (UAB) would follow Robin with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-3, but that would be the extent of the Mets scoring.

The Gatemen tacked on an insurance run the sixth as Weems singled home yet another run, as Ike Davis (Arizona State) scored. This all but did the Mets in as they didn't have another great scoring chance the rest of the way.

Wareham's bullpen came on and did a strong job of protecting the lead, allowing just a two out double in the eighth to Shane Peterson (Long Beach State). Chris Hicks (Georgia Tech) came on to record his second save, as Bleich improved to 1-0 and Matt Daly (Hawaii) fell to 3-0 on the season.

The Mets will send Austin Hudson (Central Florida) to the mound tomorrow as they travel to Bourne to take on the Braves at Doran Park.

Chris Blake

Cardinals defeat Mets 3-1

ORLEANS- Wynn Pelzer (South Carolina) went five innings en route to earning the win for Orleans as the Cardinals defeated the Mets 3-1 on Tuesday night. Bryce Stowell (Cal-Irvine) took the ball for five solid innings as well but gave up one more run than did Pelzer. There were a total of eight different hurlers showcased throughout the contest. Hyannis featured three and Orleans used their platoon of five pitchers including Nick Christiani (Vanderbilt) who recorded his second save of the season.

The Cardinals drew first blood in the fourth inning off of a Jose Jimenez (Tampa) single that drove in Dennis Raben (Miami) from second base. Raben, who started things off for Orleans with a one out walk, advanced into scoring position when Nate Freiman (Duke) drove a Bryce Stowell (Cal-Irvine) 2-2 pitch up the middle for a single. After the Jimenez RBI single, Chase D’Arnaud (Pepperdine) tacked on one more run in the Cardinals fourth when he singled in Nate Freiman from second.

The Mets broke through in the top half of the fifth inning when David Macias (Vanderbilt) reached first on a fielder’s choice. Macias advanced into scoring position after Phil Bell (UAB) grounded out to record the second out of the inning. With Scott Elmendorf (Southern Illinois) up to bat, Macias advanced to third on a wild pitch by Wynn Pelzer. What happened next is what many familiar with the Cape League lovingly refer to as a “Cape Cod Squeeze.” Macias advanced on yet another wild pitch to score the only run of the game for the Mets.
The Cardinals tacked on one more insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth inning when Dennis Raben scored his second and final run of the game.

The Mets certainly had a host of opportunities on Tuesday night but were unable to capitalize. As a result the Mets left five runners in scoring position and stranded a total of nine runners on base.

In his first outing of the season Stowell showcased a lot of promise striking out five Orleans Cardinals batters, walking just two, and offering up three hits. Stowell walked one and gave up each of the three hits to his credit in the bottom of the fourth as Orleans got on the board twice. Stephen Penney (Cal-Riverside) also saw his first work of the Cape League season in relief for Stowell. Penney went 2 1/3 innings and gave up one run off of three hits and one walk. In addition, Penney struck out three Cardinals batters. Hunter Harris (Texas) made his third appearance of the season and finished the final 2/3 of the eighth inning leaving his 0.00 ERA unscathed.

The Mets are in action again Thursday night at McKeon Park and face the Wareham Gatemen at 5:00 p.m. Those unable to attend can watch the game and commentary of John Cabral and Chris Blake as every Hyannis Mets home game will be webcast live at http://ccbl.cape.com/.

Brian Feltes

Mets fall short in extra innings

Fresh off a win over cross town rival Cotuit, the Hyannis Mets were riding high on last night's victory into today. After a scoreless inning from Falmouth and four runs from the Mets bats in the first, it looked like it was over before it started at McKeon Park. Dan Brewer (Bradley) hit a two run double over the right fielders head to spark the early rally. Patrick Long (Ga Tech) and Ryan Jackson (Miami) added RBI of their own to bring the lead to four zip. Four pitches later the wheels fell off the wagon. Aja Barto (Tulane) hit a two run homer over the fence in left, Andrew Giobbi (Vanderbilt) and Matt Nuzzo (Brown) drove in a run a piece to decimate the early lead.

After that half inning both teams seemed to settle down. They could not string together hits to score runs. Slow rollers were hit back to the pitchers. Players were fooled on off speed pitches without lifting the bat off their shoulders. Balls were being hit, but right to players, until the top of the fifth.

Going from a game that looked like it was making the first call to the bullpen in the top of the second, the game moved steadily along from that point. Matt Hague (Washington) stepped up to the plate, and on a two and nothing pitch was looking for something to hack at and got his wish driving a solo shot over the wall in deep center.

Like clock work the game sped up as players were being rung up until another three innings passed. The Mets took the lead for good in the fifth, when Vazquez stepped up and knocked the first pitch he saw out to left for a three run bomb that made the score 5-3.

Hyannis tacked on a couple more in the seventh, as Jackson registered two more RBI, giving him three for the day, and one more in the eighth on David Macias' (Vanderbilt) first run batted in on the year.

Cotuit threated, scoring three in the eighth, but Stohr was there in the ninth to slam the door and register his third save of the season. Franzblau took the win for the Mets on seven innings of work. While striking out 5, walking 5 and giving up 6 hits Franzblau gave up just one earned run improving his record to 1-1.

The lone Harwich Mariners run came in the third inning as Matt Miller (Georgia Southern) scored on a fielder's choice from Steve Strausbaugh (Western Carolina).

Dan Hudson (Old Dominion) was credited with the loss in five innings of work for the Mariners. After cruising through the first 5 2/3 innings, Hudson's no-hitter was broken up on a very close play at first base when Phil Bell (UAB) bunted his way on.

Retuning to the mound in the sixth inning, Hudson's luck turned south. After walking Scott Elmendorf (Southern Illinois), James Darnell (South Carolina) and Kiko Vasquez (Central Florida) in order, relief pitcher Evan Crawford entered the game to try and put out the fire for Hudson. Long struck out pinch-hitter Dan Brewer (Bradley) and then walked Ryan Jackson (Miami) scoring Shane Peterson. With the bases still loaded Dale Cornstubble (Central Michigan) grounded up the middle to shortstop Cole Figueroa (Florida) whose only play was to force out Jackson advancing to second, allowing Darnell to score the go-ahead run for the Mets.

Two runs proved to be all the Mets would need as Garrett Sherrill (Appalachian State) held the lead in the eighth inning. After giving up a lead off double, Sherrill retired the next three to get himself out a jam.

After tacking on an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a Phil Bell single that scored Ryan Jackson from second base, closer Tyler Stohr (North Florida) entered the game to try to preserve the win for the Mets. Stohr walked the first batter he faced but rebounded quickly retiring the last three batters of the game to earn the save and the win for the Hyannis Mets. Stohr Struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Phil Bell, who signed as a permanent player on Friday recorded two of the three hits for the Mets en route to a 2 for 4 performance with 1 RBI. Bell's two-hit game brought his average up to .333 for the season.

Great defense proved to be the key to victory on Saturday after Mets pitchers allowed lead off batters to reach base in six of nine innings. The infield worked three double-plays on the night helping keeping Harwich base runners from scoring each time. Catcher Dale Corstubble thwarted potential Harwich rallies in the third and fourth innings.Cornstubble picked off Steve Stransbaugh from first base to end the third and caught Jared Bolden (VCU) stealing to end the fourth inning for the Mets.

Strikeouts were also a staple of Saturday's contest as the game saw a combined 19. Harwich pitchers recorded 12 strikeouts as the Hyannis staff struck out 7 Mariners batters.

The first place Hyannis Mets are back in action at 5:00 pm on Sunday June 24th welcoming the Cotuit Kettleers to McKeon Park. Central Florida's Austin Hudson got the start for Hyannis and was backed by one of the team's best offensive efforts of the season.

The Mets struck for three runs in the fourth inning, as the first five batters reach base. James Darnell of South Carolina and Kiko Vazquez (Central Florida) led off with singles, followed by Patrick Long (Georgia Tech) reaching via an error. Shea Robin of Vanderbilt had a base hit to drive in one run right before Miami's Ryan Jackson had another to knock in two more.

As Hudson was cruising, he hit a road block in the top of the seventh, allowing a one out walk, a base hit and another walk to load the bases. He was pulled in favor of San Diego's Ricardo Pecina, who allowed two inherited runners to score, but was bailed out by two great by Shea Robin (Vanderbilt) gunning Red Sox out on the base paths.

Hudson went 6.1 innings, allowing 2 earned runs, 3 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. Hyannis would tack on four runs of insurance in the eighth and boy would they need it.

Lead off singles by Vazquez and Long, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Robin and two more singles from Jackson and Phil Bell (UAB) drove in two runs. After one more out was made, Dan Brewer of Bradley singled in two more runs to put the Mets up 7-2.

The game featured a fifteen minute rain delay during the sixth inning, pushing the game ever closer to the setting of the sun. With that in mind, prior to the eight inning it was predetermined that the eighth would indeed be the last inning. Pecina returned to the mound and almost lost it for Hyannis. He loaded the bases on three base hits, before allowing a grand slam to Kentucky's Collin Cowgill to make it 7-6. He then recorded a popout to put an end to the inning and the game.

Hudson (1-0) was the winner, while Steven Dodson (0-1), who went 5.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned and 2 walks, while striking out 2, took the loss. Hyannis returns home Sunday, as they take on the Cotuit Kettleers at McKeon Park at 5 P.M.

Chris Blake

Sun comes out late, Brewster bats shine early

On a cloudy day that didn't have a hint of sunshine until the Seventh Inning Stretch, Matt Daly was clocked at 95 mph on the radar gun early, and only having two hits through two innings. He looked strong, his location was on, and he was in command of his changeup. However, every pitcher tries to avoid the one bad inning they have during a game, unfortunately Daly couldn't. If Daly could have avoided that one bad inning today things might have played out a little differently for the Mets.

In the bottom of the third, Blake Tekotte (U of Miami) worked the count to 3-2 and walked on a questionable ball four call by the home plate umpire. Next batter Dan Lima (Tennesse) drove a low line drive into center that took a funny hop and got by center fielder David Macias advancing Tekotte to third and Lima to second. That was followed with a ground rule double down the right filed line by David Cooper (Cal) scoring both Tekotte and Lima, Yonder Alan hit a long fly to score Cooper who was tagging on the play. That one inning could have easily been one run instead three, keeping it closer for the Mets.

The fourth run came in the bottom of the seventh when Brad Glenn (Arizona) lead off with a double and advanced to third on a ground out to second base. Glenn would score on a pass ball on a 2-1 pitch from Daly. The batter hit a weak ground ball back to Daly on the next pitch to end the inning.

On a more positive note the Mets were able to put five hits on the board from Kiko Vazquez (Central Florida), Shane Peterson (Long Beach State), Patrick Long (GA Tech), Dale Cornstubble (Central Michigan), and a double by Scott Elmendorff (S. Illinois). James Darnell drove a long line drive all the way to the warning track in right, but Byron Wiley (Kansas State) was able to pull the ball in before it went out.

The score does not do the Mets any justice on this day. Matt Daly pitched great excluding one let down inning, Phil Bell made a diving catch in the outfield with the rest of the defense playing solid as well. Hyannis has lost a couple of close games and could easily be 4-2 instead of 2-3-1. The Mets should put these last couple of games behind them because a shot at the title is a goal that can be easily accomplished.

Gerald Holland

Darkness puts an end to promising contest

HYANNIS - They say a tie is sort of like kissing your sister. Then that's exactly what Harvey Shapiro's Bourne Braves got the Hyannis Mets to do Tuesday night at McKeon Park. The two teams were tied at two and in a surprising twist even got to play an extra inning at a park without lights. The game ended in that 2-2 in ten innings.

Austin Wood, a lefty from Texas, got the start for Hyannis, while D.J. Mitchell of Clemson took the ball for the Braves. Bourne got on the board right off the bat with a lead off triple from Ben Guez (William & Mary), who later came in to score on T.J. Steele's fielder's choice. Wood did a fine job of working out of a jam though and preventing any further damage.

Hyannis would come back to tie the score in the sixth on an RBI single by South Carolina's James Darnell that plated Shane Peterson of Long Beach State. That hit would chase Mitchell from the game. He pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 6 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 5.

The Mets took the lead for a short time, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh when Dan Brewer (Bradley) smacked a double that earned him his team leading fifth run batted in. Wood was done after 5 innings of 1 run baseball, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks and striking out 3. He was relieved by Garrett Sherrill (Appalachian State), who continued to make a case for a full season contract with two more innings of shutout baseball.

Tyler Stohr of North Florida followed Sherrill and allowed the tying run to score as he hit T.J. Steele (Arizona) to lead off the inning, followed by a walk and a sacrifice bunt. Chris Drechsel (Wagner) came up with two men in scoring position and delivered the base hit to tie the game at two.

Mitch Harris would come on for Bourne to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth, and after he was lifted with an injury, Rick Zagone followed and retired the Mets in order in the tenth inning as well.

The Mets return the field on Wednesday as they travel to Stony Brook School to take on the Brewster Whitecaps.

Chris Blake

Mets outlast Mariners in Game 4 of the CCBL Season

HYANNIS- On the arm of Andrew Doyle (Oklahoma) the Hyannis Mets rolled to their second home victory of the 2007 CCBL season, improving their record to 2-2. Doyle earned the win for the Mets giving up one run on four hits in seven innings of work as he struck out two and walked none.

Meirs Quigley (Alabama) took the loss for the Harwich Mariners as he gave up four runs and exited early after just three innings. Quigley gave up singles to the first two Mets batters he faced but rebounded well mowing down the next six in order.

The third inning proved to be all the Mets would need as they tallied four runs off of three hits and drove Quigley to an early departure. Phil Bell (Alabama-Birmingham) led off the Mets half with a single and proceeded to swipe second base. The next two batters, David Macias (Vanderbilt) and Dan Brewer (Bradley), reached on a hit by pitch and base on balls respectively. With the bases loaded, Mets first baseman Shane Peterson (Long Beach State) stayed on fire as he singled in Bell and Macias for the first two runs of the game. On two consecutive throwing errors by Mariner infielders, Brewer and Peterson advanced to score the last two runs of the third inning.

Jared Bolden (Virginia Commonwealth) doubled to start off the Harwich fourth inning as the Mariners tried to climb their way back into the contest. Bolden advanced to third on an Alex Avila (Alabama) infield single and scored the only Mariners run of the game when designated hitter Jeremy Wise (LSU) sacrificed him in on a fly ball to Dan Brewer in right field.

South Carolina third basemen and Mets second year player, James Darnell added some insurance to the Mets lead when he drove in Shane Peterson with a two-run home run that sailed over the left-field wall at McKeon Park.

That was all the Mets would need as James Jolicouer (Cal Northridge) built upon the great seven inning performance displayed by Andrew Doyle. Jolicouer faced six batters in two innings and sent each back to the dugout empty handed. Although not a save situation, Jolicouer slammed the door shut on any hopes of a Harwich comeback as he struck out two batters in the eight and ninth innings giving the Mets two solid innings in relief.

Dan Brewer and Shane Peterson held the hot bats for the Mets on Monday night and built upon their already scintillating averages. Brewer went 2 for 3 with a walk and increased his average to a team leading .571 with an on base percentage of .667. Not to be outdone, Peterson came in with a tremendous performance posting a 3-4 night that brought his season mark to .529.

The Mets are in action again Tuesday night at McKeon Park and face the Bourne Braves at 5:00 p.m. Those unable to attend can watch the game and commentary of John Cabral and Chis Blake as every Hyannis Mets home game will be webcast live at http://ccbl.cape.com.

Brian Feltes

Mets drop game #3 9-8 in Cotuit

COTUIT - One inning was all it took for the Cotuit Kettleers to get what they needed Sunday night, as they took care of the Hyannis Mets 9-3 at Lowell Park. Garrett Richards recorded the save.

Dan Brewer stayed hot, reaching base four times in five at-bats, tallying an RBI and a run scored as well. Shane Peterson had his first big game of the year, racking up six total bases, including a double and a triple. Hyannis also got its much anticipated arrival of South Carolina third baseman James Darnell, who arrived on Sunday afternoon.

Hyannis returns to action on Monday evening, welcoming the Harwich Mariners to McKeon Park for the first time in 2007.

Chris Blake

Brewer & Bell lift Mets over Cardinals

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />HYANNIS- The Mets rebounded after a rough debut Friday night against the Y-D Red Sox with a 7-5 victory against the Orleans Cardinals on Saturday night at McKeon Field. It wasn't the night that the starting pitchers had hoped for but with some solid hits and the help of some timely Cardinals miscues the Mets came out on top.

The misfortune started out early for the Orleans Cardinals. Designated hitter John Gaston singled, stole second base, then advanced to third on a Chase D'Arnaud ground out and was promptly thrown out attempting to steal home in the top half of the Cardinals 1st inning. Unable to capitalize on two first inning hits the Hyannis Mets went into the second inning in a scoreless tie.

After giving up one run off of four hits in the top half of the second inning, the Mets took advantage of four errors, turning them into three runs in the bottom half. Scott Elmendorf reached on a throwing error by short stop Mark Sobolewski. In an uncommon occurrence, Elmendorf advanced to second on what would have been a fielders choice that resulted in a fielding error. Second baseman Mark Reese attempted and failed to apply the tag to Elmendorf and then proceeded to overthrow first baseman Jose Jimenez allowing Ryan Jackson to reach first base safely. Alabama-Birmingham left fielder Phil Bell stepped up and bunted his way on loading the bases with one-out in the bottom of the second. Patrick Long reached on yet another Cardinals error scoring Elmendorf and advancing Jackson and Bell. The pride and joy of the Bradley Braves, Dan Brewer singled to right field scoring Jackson and Bell. Trying to take two bases on the Brewer single, Long was thrown out at third to end the inning.

In the top half of the 3rd the Mets had their fair share of troubles as the first two Cardinals batters reached in less than spectacular fashion. Designated Hitter John Gaston struck out swinging but reached first as a result of a wild pitch and advanced to second when Chase D'Arnaud was hit by an Austin Hudson pitch. After advancing to second and third on a wild pitch, D'Arnaud advanced to third base and Gaston scored the second run of the game for the Cardinals on a Dennis Raben sacrifice fly. Jose Jimenez singled in D'Arnaud to end the Cardinals 3rd inning.

After giving up two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, Mets starting pitcher Austin Hudson left the game in the capable hands of Garrett Sherrill and the Hyannis Mets bats. Dan Brewer started off the 5th inning rally singling to left field and then advancing to third on a Shane Peterson single to right. Sam Brown relieved starting pitcher Craig Bennigson and promptly gave second base to Peterson on a wild pitch. Kiko Vazquez scored Brewer and advanced Peterson to third on a sacrifice fly to fight field. Scott Elmendorf stepped in and drove the delivery right back at pitcher Sam Brown, whose back took the brunt of the line drive. Peterson scored on the Elmendorf single to finish the scoring in the Mets fifth inning.

After taking a base on balls, Phil Bell stole second base and scored on a Patrick Long single. Long's double produced the go-ahead and would be game winning run. To add insurance to the, already, one run lead Dan Brewer stepped in an doubled down the left field line scoring Long and the Mets final run of the game.

With the score 7-5 Garrett Sherrill took the mound in the 8th inning with his first win in the Cape Cod Baseball League in sight. Sherrill took advantage of his position and mowed down all three Cardinals batters, two of which he finished off on his own.

After Cardinals relief pitcher Ron Perry made quick work of the Mets 8th inning, Hyannis Mets manager Greg King gave the ball to Sherrill to finish the game. After giving up a hit and a walk King brought in the show stopper from North Florida, Tyler Stohr, to slam the door shut on the Cardinals 9th inning. Pinch hitting for Chase D'Arnaud, Josh Cordoso sacrificed the runners over to second and third. With one out, the Mets gave Dennis Raben first base as it was open resulting form the Cordoso sacrifice. Sthor got Nate Freiman to fly out to Shane Peterson at first base and swiftly struck out Jose Jimenez to get the save as the Hyannis Mets beat the Orleans Cardinals 7-5 at McKeon Park.

The Mets will take on the Cotuit Kettleers at 5:00 pm in Cotuit @ Lowell Park.

Brian Feltes

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.hyannismets.org/stories07/2007/06/brewer-bell-lift-mets-over-cardinals.html' title='Brewer & - It wasn't the opener that the Mets had hoped for, as Hyannis dropped their first game of the year to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 6-3 on Friday night. The defending champion Red Sox sent Co-Pitcher of the Year in the league last year, Terry Doyle of Boston College to the mound to oppose the Mets' entry of right-hander Matt Daly, who hails from Hawaii.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

On a chilly night that saw that the temperature drop into the mid-50s by the ninth inning, it was Hyannis jumping out to an early lead, as David Macias led off the game with a walk and then scored on Shane Peterson's base hit to left center. In game that saw enough errors to last the entire season, it was these defensive woes that plagued Hyannis in the third.

It took six tries for Daly to record the first out of the inning, and when he finally did there had already been three hits and two errors in the frame. Sean Ochinko led off with a single, followed by Luke Stewart's two bagger. Ochinko then scored as Johnny Ayers reached on an error by the Mets' second baseman, Scott Elmendorf. Joey Railey followed with an RBI single and Ayers scored on a throwing error by Daly.

The big hit of the inning came when Collin Cowgill smashed a two run double to left center, which he ran himself into trouble on, trying to advance two bases and score on a throwing miscue. He ended up running into catcher Shea Robin at the plate who was waiting with the ball in hand.

The third inning would be the last for the right handed tossing Rainbow Warrior, as Daly exited after allowing four hits and five runs, although just two of them were earned. Daly would be followed in relief by James Jolicoeur and lefty Ricardo Pecina.

The Mets were able to score a couple more runs in the fourth inning after a leadoff double by Peterson. With one out, Robin reached on an error by Y-D shortstop Gordon Beckham and Peterson later scored on a wild pitch. Robin would come in to touch the plate on an RBI single by Elmendorf.

That was the end of the scoring for Hyannis, as Bobby Gagg of Coastal Carolina came in to slam the door, retiring all twelve batters he faced in relief of Doyle. Doyle, the winning pitcher, lasted five innings, allowing six hits, three runs, two earned, striking out five and walking one.

The Red Sox would tack on an insurance run in the seventh as Johnny Bench Award Finalist, Buster Posey, was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double off the bat of Beckham.

The Mets return to the field tomorrow afternoon at five o'clock to take on the Orleans Cardinals at McKeon Park.

Chris Blake
