Mets fall short in extra innings

Fresh off a win over cross town rival Cotuit, the Hyannis Mets were riding high on last night's victory into today. After a scoreless inning from Falmouth and four runs from the Mets bats in the first, it looked like it was over before it started at McKeon Park. Dan Brewer (Bradley) hit a two run double over the right fielders head to spark the early rally. Patrick Long (Ga Tech) and Ryan Jackson (Miami) added RBI of their own to bring the lead to four zip. Four pitches later the wheels fell off the wagon. Aja Barto (Tulane) hit a two run homer over the fence in left, Andrew Giobbi (Vanderbilt) and Matt Nuzzo (Brown) drove in a run a piece to decimate the early lead.

After that half inning both teams seemed to settle down. They could not string together hits to score runs. Slow rollers were hit back to the pitchers. Players were fooled on off speed pitches without lifting the bat off their shoulders. Balls were being hit, but right to players, until the top of the fifth.

Going from a game that looked like it was making the first call to the bullpen in the top of the second, the game moved steadily along from that point. Matt Hague (Washington) stepped up to the plate, and on a two and nothing pitch was looking for something to hack at and got his wish driving a solo shot over the wall in deep center.

Like clock work the game sped up as players were being rung up until another three innings passed. In the bottom of the eighth, Dan Brewer stepped up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly that scored a tagging James Darnell (So. Carolina) evening the game at five. In the top of the tenth, the Falmouth Commodores had two men on when Matt Hague stepped to the plate and droved both runs in with a run out triple, and scoring on a throwing error by the Mets. Heading into the last of the tenth the Mets were able to get a man on base by a fielding error on Falmouth, but it was too little too late in this roller coaster game tonight.
