  Pennington HR, save leads Falmouth

--HYANNIS--The Falmouth Commodores took a 4-1 win over the Hyannis Mets on Saturday in the second game of a McKeon Park doubleheader. A Cotuit win over Wareham later in the afternoon set the stage for a high-drama matchup between the Mets and the Kettleers on Sunday in Hyannis, where the winner will emerge with a second-place finish in the Western Division and the right to face the Commodores in the divisional playoffs.

After his Commodores lost 5-4 to Harwich earlier in the day, Cliff Pennington did it all to make sure that they would not suffer the same fate against the Mets. His third homer of the season in the eighth inning gave the game its final score of 4-1, and a perfect ninth inning in his first appearance on the mound this season gave him a save while wrapping up the Falmouth win. The homer, a well-carrying line drive to right center, scored Danny Perales (single) and Chris Lewis (walk) with two outs.

In tuning up for the divisional playoffs, the Commodores used five of their pitchers - including probable Game 1 starter Jensen Lewis and Game 2's Dallas Buck - to set up a pitcher's duel against Hyannis's Joe Martinez. Martinez (2-5) had them out-dueled until the eighth inning, having allowed only three hits in his first seven shutout innings.

But Falmouth's Brian Bogusevic led off the eighth inning with a bunt single to third base, and a walk put two men on with no outs. After a failed John Ray sacrifice attempt turned into a strikeout, Commodores leadoff hitter Danny Perales singled through the right side to drive home Bogusevic from second. Martinez, who finished with seven strikeouts and three walks, set down Matt Antonelli on three called strikes before the fateful delivery to Pennington.

Falmouth's winning pitcher became reliever Chris Leroux (2-1), who had a pair of strikeouts in two perfect innings. Lewis had three strikeouts over the first two innings, and Dallas Buck struck out two in the following three frames. Both playoff starters allowed two hits.

The Mets broke the scoreless deadlock in the sixth inning, when Mike Phelps issued Falmouth's only base on balls to Mike Costanzo with two outs. A double to left center by Joe Holland allowed Costanzo to lumber home all the way from first base.

Holland went 2-for-4 for the Mets, adding a single in the second inning. Mike Baxter had hits in his first three trips to the plate, finishing 3-for-4. Chandler Rose also had a single to round out Hyannis's six hits.

The Commodores also finished the game with six hits, led by 3-for-5 Perales, who also had a double in the sixth inning and Falmouth's first hit in the fourth inning. Mark Hamilton went 1-for-3 with a walk and his first steal of the season.

Stats of note...the Mets also split their last doubleheader at McKeon Park, which took place on August 4, 2000; Falmouth took the win in both instances...at exactly two hours, the game was the Mets' shortest of the season...the Mets' leading hitter in the doubleheader was Baxter, who went 4-for-6 with two walks and a run scored; equally prominent with more run production was Holland, who was 4-for-8 with two doubles, a run scored, and three RBIs.
