Gary Calhoun: Head Coach/Field Manager

Alma Mater: Florida Southern College

Earning himself a positive national reputation as one of the top collegiate coaches over the past three-plus decades, Gary Calhoun brings a wealth of baseball knowledge and experience to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Calhoun has enjoyed considerable success throughout his career, which began at Florida Southern College where he participated in the 1976 National Championship victory. 

Following an outstanding collegiate career, Calhoun spent several years playing pro-baseball. 

Upon completing his career as a professional athlete, Calhoun decided to take his experience and apply it as a head coach at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, FL. Calhoun resided as head coach at Hillsborough from 1987-2015. During this time, he won NJCAA Coach of the Year honors in 1988 and was named National Coach of the Year that same year. 

While building his resume, Calhoun coached several New York Yankees minor league teams from 1997-2006. He also had experience coaching in the Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers minor league systems. Calhoun spent a decade coaching the Gulf Coast League (New York Yankees), the New York-Penn League (Detroit Tigers), and the Pioneer League (Milwaukee Brewers). 

Calhoun has also spent many years as an assistant coach at St. Leo College in west central Florida, Florida Southern College, and the University of South Florida.

With roughly 35 years of coaching experience, Coach Gary Calhoun brings with him a veteran knowledge of the game which will be of tremendous use to the players, coaching staff, and fans of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.



 
Brett Picaro: Assistant Coach

Alma Mater: Montclair State University

With roughly 20 years of experience, Brett Picaro has earned himself a respected reputation as a coach and instructor. Picaro graduated from Montclair State University in New Jersey where he was part of the baseball program as a middle infielder.

From 2008-2010, Picaro was an Assistant Coach at the County College of Morris in New Jersey. Picaro acted as hitting and infield coach for the team, and earned the team’s accomplishment of conference-best fielding percentage in 2009.

In 2018, Coach Picaro was the varsity softball head coach at Watchung Hills Regional High School, where he coached the team towards a State Sectional Final appearance. That same year, Picaro was head coach in NJ’s Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League (ABCCL).

Picaro coached at St. Joe’s Metuchen High School (NJ) in 2013, 2016, and 2017, where he supervised the infield and defense for the team. In 2019, Picaro coached the team to a State Sectional Finals appearance. 

During the summer of 2019, Picaro was the hitting coach for the Niagara Power in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL). Picaro helped coach the team to a franchise record 34 wins. That year, the Niagara Power also finished first in regular season team batting average and second in runs scored. The league's individual batting title winner that season played for the Niagara Power, and had trained with Picaro.

Having instructed players of every age throughout his career, ranging from kindergarten to the professional ranks, Picaro offers valuable insight for players wishing to hone their batting or infield skills.



 
BJ Johnson: Bench Coach

Alma Mater: Florida Southern College

Having coached and mentored at multiple levels with success, Coach BJ Johnson brings a well-respected point of view to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Johnson’s successes began when he attended Florida Southern College, where he participated in the 1976 National Championship victory as a right-handed pitcher. 

Johnson’s coaching career started when he became highly involved with his children’s baseball and softball careers. He coached at all levels, ranging from Little League to high school travel. 

Johnson has coached junior varsity and varsity high school teams for 20 some years. From 2000-2015, Johnson has spent a tenure coaching varsity baseball at Wesleyan School in Norcross, Georgia, where he won Community Coach of the Year. Wesleyan is known in Georgia for being a renowned baseball powerhouse. Johnson helped boost this well-known reputation by being a part of four state championship teams in Georgia. 

After his time in Georgia, Johnson moved to Florida where he was a coach for the Indian Rocks Christian High School from 2015-2018.

Throughout his coaching career, Johnson has coached 50 Division 1 or Division 2 college baseball players and 15 professional athletes. Having been involved in many winning programs and championship teams, Johnson has the ability to mentor players to compete at a high level with high expectations.
